Huangshan Maofeng Tea inheritor —— Xie Yi ping

Xie Yiping, the "non-heritage" inheritor for Anhui tea production and the fifth generation successor of Xie Zheng'an, the initiator of Huangshan Maofeng Tea. Born and growing in the home of tea, Xie Yiping became attached to tea since he was a kid influenced by what he saw and heard in his tea family. As early as his elementary school period, he picked fresh leaves along with the adults whenever school had a vacation for tea leaves picking (at that time the schools in mountain area would have 2-week vacation for tea leaves picking in spring tea production season), and learnt to produce tea with his three uncles since his teens.

Xie Yiping took nearly three years to slowly digest and mastered the skills. Dryness is profound for controlling the temperature and moisture content during the green embryo drying and the third-time drying. And he mastered the method of adjusting the temperature through ash poking with an ash poker, and determining the moisture content of the tea through pinching with fingers after repeated practice and observation. After years of study, Xie Yiping mastered the hand making process of Huangshan Maofeng Tea at the age of 18. He also deeply realized that there was a lot of knowledge in each step of the production of Huangshan Maofeng Tea, and experienced the hardships of tea makers. After graduating from high school, Xie Yiping had the good fortune to work in She County Tea Company as a tea taster. During the work, he studied in Twaikay Tea School for two years, and systematically learnt and mastered the professional knowledge in planting, primary and refine processing, evaluating and tasting of tea. Through production practice and professional learning, Xie Yiping comprehensively mastered the traditional production technique of Huangshan Maofeng Tea and became a famous tea maker.

To further inherit the traditional production technique of Huangshan Maofeng Tea, Xie Yiping established "Huizhou Caoxi Tea Plant" in 1993 under the persuasion of his uncles, put up the gold-lettered signboard, "Xie Yuda" again, and shouldered the heavy responsibility of creating the glory of "Xie Yuda Tea House".

In 2006, the tea plant was reorganized as Xie Yuda Tea Co., Ltd. after the share reform. While inheriting traditional Huangshan Maofeng Tea technique, the Company also innovates the processing technique of Huangshan Maofeng Tea, which has greatly improved the quality of Huangshan Maofeng Tea.

In 2007, Xie Yuda established "Huangshan Maofeng Tea Museum". The Museum collected a lot of precious historical relics which reappeared the history of the foundation and birth of Huangshan Maofeng Tea, and revealed the origin and authentic production process of Huangshan Maofeng Tea. Construction of Huangshan Maofeng Tea Museum not only enhanced the cultural connotation of Huangshan Maofeng Tea, but also made a positive contribution to the cultural heritage of the production technique of Huangshan Maofeng Tea.

Xie Yiping has participated in the establishment of Chinese Standard, Product of Geographical Indication-Huangshan Maofeng Tea, and provincial standard, Technical Regulation for Clean Processing of Huangshan Maofeng Tea. In April 2010, selected by AQSIQ, standard tea samples of various grades in Product of Geographical Indication-Huangshan Maofeng Tea were collected by QC Departments of all levels as standard samples.

It is worth mentioning that, as the inheritor, Xie Yiping clearly knows the relationship between inheritance and succession, especially the close and inseparable relationship between the non-material culture and the corresponding material culture needs a scientific understanding and explanation. In order to inherit the traditional production technique of Huangshan Maofeng Tea, Xie Yiping seriously and actively teach, help and guide, and train 21 disciples in succession. And his son, Xie Mingzhi has systematically and comprehensively mastered the traditional production technique of Huangshan Maofeng Tea under his careful teaching. Therefore, for the protection of tea producing technique of Huangshan Maofeng Tea, Xie Yiping believes that the protection is for the comprehensive accumulation of tea makers' understanding, experience, and skills to tea production as well as the realistic achievement of continuous innovation and technological change, and it is also for the endless source of living water of a traditional culture from the past to the future.
